NEC_42XR4PCMag has reviewed NEC 42XR4 42″ plasma display panel and given a high mark as 4 out of 5. NEC 42XR4 is also rewarded the Editors’ Choice award.

Pros

  • Exceptional image quality
  • Comprehensive display control options

Cons

  • Remote lacks backlight. No extras bundled in
  • Pricey

Bottomline

The NEC 42XR4 offers the best picture quality of any 42-inch plasma TV we have seen to date. But its premium price doesn’t include many extras, the remote is near-useless in the dark, and to get the most out of it you’ll need to have it professionally calibrated.

Taiwan-based DigiTimes reported that representative from Sony’s purchasing department may meet up with Taiwanese panel makers to discuss LCD TV panel orders. The orders are expected to be confirmed in this April.

The sources stated that Sony is loosking to take advantage of current cheap pricing of TV panel market. The company will release several new LCD TV models in second half of this year.

According to a February Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report, Sony is in talks with AU Optronics (AUO), Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO), Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT), and Quanta Display to source 26- and 32-inch TV panels.

Pioneer PDP-42A3HD 42" Plasma TV

Pioneer PDP-42A3HD 42" Plasma TV

Audioholics has published a detailed review on Pioneer PDP-42A3HD 42″ Plasma TV and given an overall rating of 3.25/5.

The Pioneer PDP-42A3HD plasma television has excellent color and detail reproduction. Its ability to function as a high definition display, with progressive scan and upconversion capability is both effective and recommended should you not have the ability to feed it a better source signal. Where the Pioneer stumbles is in black level detail and overall dynamic range. We have seen better performances and feel that the Pioneer ends up being an average (that is to say still good) performer in a sea of competitive displays. Still – $2499 MSRP for a Pioneer plasma display is a tempting choice when evaluating the 42″ flat panel market. We look forward to evaluating one of the company’s higher end PureVision plasmas as we feel they possess technologies and features that are purposefully left out of the PDP-42A3HD in order to appeal to a more cost-conscious consumer.

Pros

  • Super slim display
  • Excellent quality and “bang for the buck”
  • High measured ANSI contrast ratio
  • ATSC and NTSC tuners

Cons

  • “S-curve” gamma with crushed blacks
  • Intrusive orbital screen saver on by default
  • Limited color temperature controls
  • Limited picture controls in user menu
  • Flimsy, extraneous remote control cover
